Update: Shooting suspect arrested following overnight search near Glendive

The suspect in a shooting that occurred in Dawson County on Thursday afternoon was taken into custody on Friday morning without incident, according to Dawson County Sheriff Ross Canen. The suspect, who sustained two gunshot wounds in the incident, was transported to Glendive Medical Center.

The suspect’s injuries were sustained on Thursday. Law enforcement did not fire any shots throughout the situation.

Canen said officials were processing the scene of the arrest Friday morning.

Area law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting that occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2 in the area around Marsh Road several miles south of Glendive. According to the information from the sheriff’s office, two men exchanged gunfire. One local man was treated for minor injuries to his hand Thursday.

The report of the incident drew a response from the DCSO, Montana Highway Patrol, Probation and Parole, Motor Carrier Services, Glendive Ambulance Service, West Glendive Fire Department and Yellowstone County SWAT unit.

Local pilot Craig Hostetler provided aerial surveillance and Prairie County authorities were also notified of the situation, as it was believed the suspect was traveling that direction before it was determined he was confined to a vacant homestead in Dawson County on Thursday evening.

According to Canen, law enforcement stayed on the scene throughout the night, waiting for daylight to take any action. The suspect surrendered without incident to law enforcement at approximately 8:15 a.m. and was transported for treatment of two gunshot wounds to his body. The situation is still under investigation.

Residents and businesses in a 10-mile radius of the incident were advised to lockdown and shelter in place on Thursday as the situation developed, however that directive was lifted around 6 p.m. When the incident was thought to be a potential threat to the public, Dawson Community College was put on lockdown and Glendive Public School sent messages through text and email saying the schools were on “active hold” and all buildings were locked.

The situation was initially reported as an “active shooter” but was later classified as an isolated incident.

The suspect’s identity was not released on Friday as the sheriff’s office continues to gather information.

The suspect was arrested Friday morning at about 8:15 a.m., the sheriff’s office said on social media.

No other information was immediately released.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office released this statement Friday morning:

On November 2nd, 2023 at approximately 2:45 p.m, an incident occurred between two male subjects on Marsh Road in Dawson County. Gunfire was exchanged between the two men. One local man was treated for minor injuries. The second subject is believed to be contained to a homestead in the area. Area Law Enforcement is on scene and has been since the situation first unfolded. This is an isolated incident, and there is currently no threat to the general public. The sheriff’s office asks that the general public avoid the area as the situation is ongoing.
