You may have noticed the fence is coming down at Baker Metal and Recycling north of Baker. I was curious as to what was going on, camera in hand, I decided to pay a visit to Baker Metal. Yes, even scrap metal cannot avoid the photographer in me. Neil was kind enough to take a few minutes out of his busy day to visit with me. I found out that they moved their scrap metal pile to a location west of town with access to a railroad spur. This will allow them to process and load the scrap metal onto a train from one location. Neil said they still need to put a scale in at the new location. Until that is ready folks weigh their loads at the current location, then unload at the new yard. He knows that’s a bit inconvenient right now, but hopes people will have patience until the new scale is in place. Moving all the scrap metal to the new location took hundreds of loads over 4 to 5 months time. Once the old yard is cleaned up, a see–through fence will be built, and they will move their farm and ranch sales items into the yard for display. Baker Metal and Recycling handles scrap metal within a 150 mile radius and roll–off containers from a 250 miles radius.
